Bio

Josh Sheppard is an educator, performer, and composer based in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He is currently completing his Doctorate in Musical Arts at James Madison University, studying under professor Casey Cangelosi. In addition to his degree work, Josh serves as the Graduate Percussion Assistant where he teaches and arranges for the Marching Royal Dukes percussion section. He holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music Education and Music Performance from George Mason University, as well as a Masters Degree in Music Performance from James Madison University.

Josh has also performed with multiple competitive marching ensembles, including Phantom Regiment and Matrix World Indoor Percussion. He attended the Sewanee Summer Music Festival in the summer of 2019 and was the winner of the Jaqueline Avent Concerto Competition. He has also been a finalist in the JMU Concerto/Aria Competition and the 2024 Modern Snare Drum Competition.

Outside of his work at JMU, Josh currently serves as a Lecturer of Music at Washington and Lee University and is the Music Coordinator for the WGI PIO finalist group Spectre Percussion. In the future, Josh plans to continue teaching at the collegiate level after receiving his DMA while expanding his role in leadership in the marching arts.
